Short-Term & Contract Aide Placements

Not every staffing need is open-ended. Sometimes a student’s IEP calls for support during a defined recovery period, an interim assignment covers the gap while a permanent hire is finalized, or a program needs bridge coverage for a set number of weeks. Blue Horizons places short-term and contract aides — Instructional, Behavioral, or Sensory — with the exact same screening, training, and supervision as an open-ended placement. A defined end date is a scheduling detail, not a reason to lower the bar.

Why “Temporary” Never Means “Less Vetted”

A generalist staffing vendor often treats a short assignment as low-stakes — less vetting, less oversight, whoever’s available fastest. That approach doesn’t hold up in a special education classroom. An aide covering a six-week interim assignment is working from the same IEP, supporting the same student, and carrying the same legal weight as one in a year-long role. Every Blue Horizons aide, regardless of assignment length, has already cleared DOJ Live Scan fingerprinting and reference checks and completed our onboarding before they’re eligible for any placement — short-term contracts draw from that same pre-screened pool, not a separate, faster-but-thinner track.

Where Short-Term Placements Come From

A Defined Accommodation Period

A student’s IEP team calls for aide support during a specific recovery, transition, or evaluation window — support that’s needed on a fixed timeline, not indefinitely.

An Interim Assignment

A district is actively hiring for a permanent position and needs a qualified aide in the classroom in the meantime, so the student’s support doesn’t lapse while the search continues.

A Bridge Contract

A program is transitioning between vendors, or needs coverage through the end of a semester or school year, and wants that specific, bounded scope agreed up front.

How a Defined-Period Placement Works

We start by scoping the assignment with your named point of contact: the student’s needs, the expected start and end dates, and what happens if the timeline shifts. From there, the same Blue Horizons Standard applies:

  • The aide matched to your classroom has already cleared DOJ Live Scan fingerprinting and reference checks — no shortcut screening for shorter contracts
  • Onboarding and role-specific training happen before day one, the same as any long-term placement
  • A single point of contact from senior management stays assigned to the placement for its full duration, however long that is
  • Attendance, timesheets, and journals are tracked in our system from the first day of the contract, not just for longer engagements

Continuity Doesn’t End When the Contract Does

A short-term aide still feeds into our Quarterly Performance Review Program for as much of the cycle as the placement covers, so your administrators have documentation, not just an assurance, that the assignment was supervised properly start to finish. And if a defined-period placement needs to extend — the search takes longer, the accommodation period is renewed — we can typically keep the same aide in place rather than starting the match over, which matters for a student who’s already built rapport with that person. That continuity is part of why districts already working with us on longer-term staffing also come to us for the shorter, defined-scope assignments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How short can a contract placement be?

Contact our 24-hour service center with your timeline and student needs. Because our aides are already screened and trained before any assignment begins, we’re matching from a ready pool rather than starting a hiring process for each contract length.

Does a short-term aide get less supervision than a long-term one?

No. Every placement, regardless of length, includes the same named point of contact, the same attendance and progress tracking, and participation in the Quarterly Performance Review Program for the portion of the cycle it covers.

What happens if our timeline changes mid-contract?

Tell your point of contact as soon as the timeline shifts. In most cases we can extend the same aide’s assignment rather than rematching, so the student keeps working with someone they already know.
